Riz Raza — Stop Letting Life Happen to You

Stop letting life
happen to you.

I spent years hitting every milestone that was supposed to make me feel alive.
It didn’t. What I found instead — Stoicism, nervous system science, and daily practice — changed everything.
I write about that intersection, from Dubai.

Born & based in Dubai

I grew up in Dubai.
I chased everything.
Then I woke up.

Dubai is all I’ve ever known. I watched this city rise from sand to skyline, and thought if I worked hard enough, I’d rise with it. I did. By my mid-thirties I had the title, the apartment, the salary. I checked every box.

I felt nothing. My nervous system was always on. My mind was always somewhere else. I’d been running from myself for years, and hitting milestones was just a faster way to run.

What stopped me wasn’t dramatic — it was a quiet Tuesday when I realized I was living someone else’s idea of a good life. I found Stoic philosophy. Then nervous system science. Then the actual practice of designing a life on purpose, not just reacting to one.

That’s what I write about. Not theory. The real work — from Dubai, every week.

Practice

Ancient wisdom.
Modern science.
Daily practice.

Everything I create sits at the intersection of these three ideas — the philosophy, the body, and the intentional design of each day.

Applied Stoicism

Not armchair philosophy. Practical Stoic tools you can use today — at work, in relationships, when things fall apart. The ancient operating system for a modern life.

I grew up where moving first meant getting punished.

Safety meant waiting. Sit still until someone says it’s okay.

Then I watched Dubai build from sand to skyline — because someone decided to start anyway.

That rewired me.

The people who build aren’t fearless. They just decided fear doesn’t set the timeline.

AED 176.7 billion.

That’s what Dubai’s property market did in the first 90 days of 2026.

23% higher in value than the same quarter last year.

While half the world hit pause, this city hit fast-forward.

Uncertainty isn’t a reason to stop building. It’s the reason to build faster.

Riz Raza @theoneriz

Yesterday, debris from an aerial interception hit a building in Dubai Internet City.

No injuries. No fire. Authorities had it contained in minutes.

But that’s not what hit your nervous system.

The group chat hit first. A forwarded photo. A voice note from someone who “heard from someone.”

Your chest tightened before you even verified anything.

That’s not weakness. That’s your amygdala doing its job.

Riz Raza @theoneriz

I know that feeling — when everything shifts and you can’t control any of it.

Here’s what still works:

Your body still moves.
Your breath still works.

Start with that. Rebuild from there.

Dubai just activated a Dhs1 billion economic support package.

Day 33 of regional tensions. Uncertainty everywhere.

And this city’s response? Invest a billion dirhams into its people.

Here’s what that teaches about living intentionally when the world feels shaky.

Riz Raza @theoneriz

Most people are waiting for the world to calm down before they focus.

The Stoics had a word for this: procrastination dressed as wisdom.

The world doesn’t calm down. It just offers different noise.

Your focus isn’t a reward for stability. It’s how you create it.

Your nervous system doesn’t care about your goals.

It cares about safety.

Until you learn to speak its language, willpower alone won’t save you.

The most productive thing I did today:

Sat on my balcony in Dubai Marina for 10 minutes.

No phone. No agenda. Just watching the water.

Intentional rest isn’t lazy. It’s strategic.

Calm isn’t the absence of chaos.

It’s the ability to choose your response inside it.

That’s the whole game.

Try this before your next big meeting:

Exhale longer than you inhale. 4 seconds in, 6 seconds out. Do it 3 times.

You just told your vagus nerve to shift from fight-or-flight to calm-and-clear.

Takes 30 seconds. Changes the whole room.
